04-Aug-2001 -- We had come to England for a vacation along the south coast, and were spending the weekend in Winchester. My wife was sleeping off the jet lag, and I saw that I wasn't too far from the confluence at 51N/2W, so I jumped in the rental car and headed towards Salisbury.
It rained on and off as I drove west. Fortunately it stopped before I started walking. The Ordnance Survey map showed a foot path that ran close to the confluence so when I saw the footpath sign by the side of the road, I parked and set out. Unfortunately I lost the trail, and ended up just following the GPS through the fields and trees toward the wheat field where the confluence lay. Picture #1 is toward the west of the field with the confluence. I wasn’t sure exactly where in the field the confluence was at first, but I was able to follow the trail someone else had cut through the wheat to the general area of the confluence, and then walked up and down the tractor path until all zeros appeared on the GPS, picture #2. Picture #3 is of the confluence looking north, and picture #4 is toward the south. Picture #5 is a panorama taken at the confluence, sorry about the darkness of the picture…
After getting the pictures, I was able to find a better way back to the road through a couple of pastures; I just hope there is no hoof and mouth disease in this area.
