10-Mar-2002 -- We had already postponed this trip at least once, and then a hurried phone call to tell me that "someone" had forgotten not only the GPS, but also the digital camera almost aborted this attempt. What's more, as if that wasn't enough, while idly viewing the confluence website just before leaving I realised that we weren't alone- someone else had had the foresight to actually plan a visit to the very same confluence point…. possibly even today ….or yesterday!

So it was with this added frisson of competition at our backs, that we set off from Santiago de Compostela to cover the 200 and something kilometres to A Gudiña, where, after seeking directions, we turned off the 'autovia' and continued along the N525 and the OR311 through O Pereiro, A Mexquita to Cávados and finally headed in the direction of Castromil. We monitored the GPS continually to gauge our distance from the confluence point, and when the lowest distance of 950 meters coincided with the appearance of a dirt track leading almost directly to it, we piled out of the car and continued on foot. [ N41º 59' 47", 9 W6º 59 22,0]

We followed the track, lined with sporadic oak trees, until it seemed to diverge [N41º 59' 55, 3 W6 59' 44", 6] , where we followed the "Go to" arrow on the GPS and went cross country in a more or less straight line. Fortunately the terrain was fairly easy going: uphill and strewn with boulders and rocky outcrops, but there was NO GORSE OR BRAMBLES! The predominant vegetation cover was broom and heather, which although impeded our progress, was not impenetrable.

The confluence point lies at a height of 1,180m in a thicket of broom, which limits manoeuvrability and caused us much delay in getting our line of zeros on the GPS. To the North East we saw a hill fire in the distance beyond Castromil and noted windfarms on the crest of hills to the north east and east. Our track from A Gudiña to the confluence was recorded on a Garmin Mapsource (Spain -Roads and Recreation) map and can be supplied to anyone who wishes to download it from iivictor@usc.es
