During a 4 day visit to the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas natural park, the largest one of Spain, we (my wife and I) explored this area. Utilising our gps, which was adjusted for the datum Wgs84, we looked for the exact location of the crossing between the 38º North parallel and the 3º West meridian.

This area is located near the town of Chilluevar, and it is accessed by a small local road that leads to the Aguascebas reservoir. After 3.5 kilometres on this road, there is a dirt road on the right, location where we leave our vehicle. The elevation here is 870 meters above sea level. We continue on foot on this easy road. Further on this road, as we continue our descent, we cross two intersections. Past a water concrete tank, we approach a small house. We jump over a small stone wall to finally get to our destination. Nowhere on sight there are any ‘no trespassing ‘ signs. We are surrounded by olives trees, the most common tree in this region, Jaen. Olives are collected from these trees to make virgin olive oil so much appreciated by fine cooks. The exact point where we obtained the exact reading of 38ºN-3ºW is right where a big rock is located. The geometry of the location of the satellites on the sky is very good with 6 satellites on sight, well separated from each other and indicating an accuracy of 5 mts. The elevation on that point is 708 mts. The distance travelled indicated on our gps since the starting point where we left our vehicle ( on a straight line) is 1,45 kms, being the real distance walked next to 2 kms. At 12:30 pm we are back where we started, sweating from the tremendous heat but content for having reached our goal.

Already in the car and next to the sign indicating the town of Chilluevar, the gps indicates that the crossing we had earlier been to is located exactly 3 kms due east. Here we are at an elevation of 700 meters.

The Park of Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas has an extension of 2143 km2 Inside the river Gudalquivir, the most important river of Andalucía, starts. There are many other rivers and streams and also some reservoirs as that of the Tranco. The number of different vegetable species is very large, with a wide variety of trees and bushes, over all black pine, laricio pine, enebros, madroños…. Concerning the fauna, there are plenty of water fowl, deer, goats and wild boars. Wild boars are very easy to spot in the afternoon. In the other surrounding towns it is easy to find archaeological sites as well as interesting old churches and castles, some of them in ruins.

20-Jun-2002 -- Datos de la visita: 20 de Junio de 2002, 11.30 pm horas. 35ºC. Día despejado, sin aire. Durante una visita de 4 días al parque natural de sierra de Cazorla, Segura y las villas, el mayor de España en extensión, realizamos mi mujer y yo, la búsqueda de esta confluencia. Utilizando nuestro gps ajustado en el datum Wgs84, buscamos el punto donde se juntan los 38º de latitud Norte con los 3º de longitud Oeste.

El acceso a la zona de la confluencia fue desde el pueblo de Chilluevar, por una pequeña carretera local que lleva al embalse de Aguascebas. A 3.5 kms por esta carretera, sale un pista de tierra por la dcha, lugar donde dejamos el vehículo. La altitud en este punto es de 870 mts. El recorrido a pie hasta el punto, se inicia por esta cómoda pista. Se pasaron dos cruces, siempre en bajada. En la última parte de la misma y tras pasar un depósito con agua, nos acercamos a una pequeña casa en medio del monte. Saltamos por encima de un pequeñísimo muro de piedras para localizar el punto en la parte final. En ningún momento se leyó ninguna indicación que impidiera el paso. Vemos olivos por todos lados, plantación generalizada en la provincia de Jaen para la obtención de olivas y posterior transformación en el aceite de oliva virgen tan apreciado en la buena mesa. El punto en cuestión es sobre una piedra, lugar donde se consigue la lectura exacta de 38ºN-3ºW. La geometría de los satelites es muy buena con 6 satélites a la vista bien separados e indicando una exactitud de 5 mts. La altitud en ese punto indicada es de 708 mts. El recorrido en linea recta desde el punto de salida es de 1,45 kms, siendo los reales recorridos próximos a los 2 kms. A las 12.30 pm estamos de vuelta arriba con mucho calor, pero con un objetivo alcanzado.

Ya en el automovil y junto al cartel indicador de entrada al pueblo de Chilluevar, desde el Oeste, el gps señala a 3 kms exactos al Este, la dirección a la confluencia visitada. En este punto la altitud es de 700 mts.

El Parque de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas tiene una extensión de 2143 km2 , en su interior nace el río Gudalquivir, el más importante de Andalucía. Existen muchos otros rios y riachuelos y también embalses como el del Tranco. Sus especies vegetales son numerosas en árboles y matorral, destacando en cantidad el Pino negro y como especie representativa el pino laricio, aunque también: Enebros, madroños... Respecto a la fauna, numerosas aves, pero en tierra destacan por su abundancia: Ciervos, cabras y Jabalies, a los que es realmente facil poder observar a la caida de la tarde. En los pueblos próximos es facil encontrar restos arqueológicos así como interesantes iglesias y castillos, algunos en ruinas.
