04-Jul-2002 -- My interest in the confluence project started when I came across an article in the USAToday paper that discussed the project.
My initial search for a nearby (I live in Pittsburgh PA) confluence discovered one near Somerset PA. It is 40N 79W. After reviewing the confluence web site, I found someone had already visited it, but knew this would be a good start on a confluence search endeavor.
I looked up the confluence on the Maptech web site , and found it out route 31 from Somerset, with a left past the SCI Somerset (see web site for interesting story of previous search). You have to make a left on to a local road.
Using my GPS as a guide, I followed the road until I interescted 79W. I parked the car, and deduced that the confluence was about 50 feet north in a field. The field was posted so I decided to ask permission from the owners. The previous visitors to the confluence did not mention this.
Fortunatly, they happened to be driving out of their driveway at the time, and saw my car. They thought my car was disabled. After explaing the project to them , they did give me permission to locate the confluence.
The previous visit was at time when there was no vegetation. On my visit there was.
I have included photos (digital) of my GPS, and directional pictures from the confluence.
