#1: A view to the south across the dry lake bed.

(visited by Jack Frickey and Janice Kennedy)

11-Aug-2002 -- Both of my electronic map systems were a little ambiguous about this area. Nonetheless, we found the desert dirt road that took us north from NV 375 (the Extraterrestrial Highway) along the 116 longitude and along the western edge of a dry lake bed. As we were traveling north, we watched through our binoculars as a truck drove across the lakebed and back. After passing one of the corrals mentioned by the previous visitors we entered the lakebed ourselves and drove directly towards the confluence. 38N116W is a couple hundred yards north of the edge of the lakebed, but the vegetation is sparse and the ground flat so I had no trouble driving right to the confluence spot.

Photo #1 is a view looking back south toward the dry lakebed. It was getting late in the day so the shadows were lengthening as can be seen in photo #2, a view looking north with Jan and my Explorer. My ski pole marks the zero point where I got all zeros on the GPSR (photo #4). Although late in the day, it was still quite hot in the August Nevada desert as you can tell from my attire in photo #3 in a view to the east. This was to be the night of the Perseid meteor shower and we were headed for my favorite hot spring near Austin, more than 100 miles to the northwest, to watch it, so we didn’t stay long. We took a different route across the lakebed to the west and exited onto NV 375 at Fred’s Well much further north than our approach route and avoided many miles of bumpy desert dirt roads.
