(visited by Dave Brooks)

26-Mar-2003 -- San Diego County’s only confluence is located in the city of Poway about 3 miles from my house. It had not been visited for two years, and I thought an update would be a good way for me to start my confluence hunting career. This site is about 300 feet north of Oak Canyon Rd. in a hilly, rustic area called Warren Canyon. See Photo #5 for a view of the confluence vicinity as viewed from the road. Warren Canyon is a southern drainage for Mt. Woodson, which is visible in the background.

After pulling the County Assessor map for this location, it was clear that this confluence is on private property. I parked my car on Oak Canyon Rd. and walked down a driveway towards the confluence and was lucky to meet the owner of this parcel. He is in the process of building a house in a cut he has made just below the confluence. He is aware of the uniqueness of his location, and has seen several Geocachers searching for the site. After speaking with him for a few minutes, he gave me permission to go on his property. While he was tolerant of us "geonerds", it will be even more important to get his permission in the future after his home is completed. It's a pretty steep climb to the confluence and he did express concern that someone could get hurt while doing it.

I found the point quickly (see Photo #6), took the cardinal photos (#1-4) and left so the owner could focus on building his castle. I’m hooked! (I see some challenges in AZ...)

Tom McCollum writes:
I am a property owner adjacent to the 117 W 33 N confluence in Poway, CA. My house is visible in some of the panoramic photos on the website. In order to access the confluence you must use my road and driveway. I welcome people participating in this Project and will allow access if permission is requested. Unfortunately, I can only get you to about 50 meters. To get any closer would be on my neighbor's property. He has an easement through my land. I can help coordinate a visit with him as he has allowed access in the past. We have enjoyed most of the geocachers who have been respectful of the area. It is kind of interesting to live next to the only degree confluence in San Diego County. I have wondered if there was at cold war no decimal targeting missile aimed at us.
Any requests can be sent to the Western USA coordinator, and they will be forwarded to Tom.

Update (from visit 7):
While we were there, one of the homeowners came out, and apparently confusing us with geocachers, explained that the confluence "had been removed". He also said that he was having a lot of problems with mudslides, and asked that we not come back, and tell other people that the confluence was on private property.
