28-Dec-2003 -- During our Christmas holidays to South Africa, we visited the Western Cape with my brother Cecil, his wife Gerna and Di, my better half. I had learned about the Degree Confluence Project while surfing the Internet at home. I saw that there were still some points in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, a sparsely populated area, which had not yet been visited.

After a brief discussion we decided that we would try and reach 31S 24E. This meant that we had to make a detour of a few hours from our initial travel plan but none of us minded too much as we were on holiday. The last 20 km to the Confluence was a bumpy drive down a dirt road and we eventually arrived as close to the point as possible by road. The Confluence we were headed for was still approximately 2.5 km away.

We tried to ask permission at a nearby farm house as it seemed to be on the land of a nearby farm, but we only met some friendly guard dogs and unfortunately no people! So my brother and I set off across the field, after leaving our partners in the car. It was a scorching 38° Celsius as by now it was around midday.

When we arrived at the Confluence we took photos of the GPS to prove that we had been to the correct co-ordinates. The whole experience took a couple of hours and we were all very pleased at our little adventure.
