Aproveitando que estava de férias no Rio Grande do Norte, resolvi visitar esta confluência por estar a “apenas” 92 km do hotel em que estava hospedado, em Natal.
Quando saí do Rio de Janeiro, onde moro, esta confluência ainda não havia sido visitada, logo, eu não podia deixar de seguir todo o procedimento básico: imprimi o guia de estradas do site Mapquest, entrando na opção “street” na própria página da confluência, também para verificar as cidades próximas e fui à mapoteca do IBGE para tirar cópia de mapas da região de forma a checar possíveis acidentes geográficos que pudessem se tornar problemas. Por sorte a região é plana, fica a uns 10 km da cidade de Barcelona e indicava a existência de um caminho passando bem perto da confluência. Com uma ligação telefônica para a rodoviária de Natal descobri que a empresa de ônibus que faz o trajeto Natal-Barcelona é a Empresa Alves e, ligando para lá, anotei os horários.

Encontrei um site da cidade de Barcelona e entrei em contato com o webmaster da mesma (Sr. José de Arimater) já prevendo a necessidade de um auxílio para arranjar transporte para nos levar da cidade à confluência e indicou o Sr. Eurimar, que também é conhecido na cidade e tem uma van que poderia nos ajudar. O programa Fantástico, da Rede Globo de TV, entrou em contato com vários “caçadores de confluências” interessado em acompanhar uma visita, e assim ficou acertado.

A equipe destinada a gravação chegou às 8:00 ao hotel onde estávamos hospedados e fomos para a rodoviária comprar as passagens para Barcelona para o horário de 9:00.
A viagem foi pelas rodovias BR304, BR226 e RN203, numa paisagem de agreste sem árvores altas e quando vislumbramos o rio Potengi, verificamos que ele está quase seco.
Ao chegarmos à cidade às 11:40 (foto 2), seguimos a indicação e entrei em contato com o Sr. Eurimar, que não pôde deixar o trabalho na mercearia para nos ajudar, mas nos apresentou ao Sr. Antônio que nos levaria até mais próximo do ponto.
Voltamos para a RN203 e, indo na direção da cidade de São Tomé, entramos na primeira entrada à esquerda ( S 5º 57’ 58,3” W 35º 57’ 47,8” ) numa estrada de terra até um ponto distante 935m da confluência numa casa abandonada, mas abrimos a cerca de arame farpado e o carro conseguiu ir até ( S 6º 00’ 10,4” W 36º 00’ 15,4” ) (foto 3).

As últimas centenas de metros percorremos em uma caminhada bem fácil num campo de capim baixo.
Quando o GPS ficou “zerado” (foto 4), estava captando 10 satélites indicando uma precisão de 7m e uma altitude de 181 m. Tirei as fotos regulamentares que mostram a bonita região.
Pela manhã, verifiquei que Zanoni Saraiva já havia estado neste local 4 dias antes, mas sua visita ainda estava com status “pending”; acho que utilizei a mesma pedra que ele para marcar a confluência. Deixei a minha placa lá (foto 6).

Foi uma aventura em uma região do interior do Brasil onde os habitantes sempre estão dispostos a agradar e ajudar pessoas diferentes que apareçam na cidade. Apesar de chuvas recentes tornar a região bem verde, os rios estavam secos e a população aproveita o leito ainda úmido para plantar alimentos. Em várias casas também vimos plantações de um tipo de cacto chamado palma, que será utilizado como alimento para o gado quando a época da seca chegar.

Since I was spending my vacation on Natal - Rio Grande do Norte, I decided to visit this confluence that was "just" 92 km far from the hotel I was in. When I left Rio de Janeiro, where I live, this confluence has been not visited yet. So I had to follow all the basic procedures: print the Mapquest site road map, with the option "street" on the confluence page, I verified also the cities around the confluence and I went to the IBGE map library to take map copies, just to check if there could be possible "geographic issues" that could turn out to problems.

But there were not. With luck I realized that the surround was plane and the confluence is located 10 km far from the city of Barcelona (RN) and I discovered also, a path very near the confluence.

By phone, I called the Natal bus station and discovered that Empresa Alves was the Bus Company that covers the way from Natal to Barcelona. I took note of the bus times. I found a website of the Barcelona City and got in touch with the webmaster (Mr. Jose de Arimater) just to check the possibilities to get transportation from the city to the confluence.

Mr. Jose de Arimater indicated Mr. Eurimar that is a very well known person in the city and has a big car and could help us.
The Rede Globo TV channel program FANTASTICO got in touch with many "confluence hunters", interested in following a visit and so everything was settled down for them to follow my visit.
The TV recording crew arrived at the hotel at 08:00 am and them we went to the bus station to buy tickets to Barcelona at 09:00am.
We went along the roads BR304, BR226 and RN203; the sight was very rustic, all around us, without big trees. We saw also the Potengi River, but it was almost dry.

We arrived at Barcelona city at 11:40 (picture 2), following the indications I found Mr. Eurimar, that could not help us due to his job at the grocery, but he introduced us to Mr. Antonio that would guide us until the nearest point to the confluence.

We went back, by car, to RN203 in St. Tome's direction, then we got the first branch left ( S 5o 57' 58,3" W 35o 57' 47,8" ) until a point 935m far from the confluence with an empty house. We opened the fancy and the car could go until (S 6o 00' 10,4" W 36o 00' 15,4" ) (picture 3). We walked through the last meters of the distance, but the walk was easy in a field with short grass. When we got the right point through the GPS it was in line with 10 satellites, indicating a precision of 7 meters and a 181masl. I took the regular pictures that show a very beautiful region.

In the next morning I verified that Zanoni Saraiva has had been at the confluence 04 days before, but his visit were still with pending status. I think I used the same stone that he has used to mark the place of the confluence. I left my sign there. (picture 6).

It was an adventure in the Brasil country region where people are very nice and are always available to help different people that show up in the city. In spite of the rain that is falling on that region and the verdure all around, the rivers were dry and people is used to cultivate food in the riverbanks. We have seen also many cactus fields in many farms. This cactus is called "palma" and it's used as food to the cattle in the dry period of the year.
