17-Oct-2004 –

After an intensive preparation and gathering information about the zone of this CP, I depart from Caracas in my Land Cruiser at 3:30 am together with my second son Gustavo and my nephew Rodolfo and with the objective of to hunt the confluence N9 W65. The way I decide to use was going first toward east to Barcelona, then south up to El Tigre and from here return to west, to pass Pariaguán and on the road from Pariaguán to Santa Maria de Ipire, just before that town, turn to north using a road to Zaraza. There are others ways to approach this CP that are shorter, but I have no doubt that they are not in the same good condition like this one and in addition they are not convenient to use at night. Just before sunrise we stop for breakfast, later we make two stops for fuel and the last at Pariaguán to prepare our cooler with beer, ice and some sodas in order to be appropriately hydrated just before gets inside the forest and of course to further celebration.

The junction with the road to Zaraza it is hard to detect because it is located just after a curve, there is not sign and the vegetation block somehow the view of the interception. Now I wonder why the previous visitor, who tried to visit this CP without success, missed this junction, but fortunately my GPS has a map with the road to Zaraza and was easy to be aware and find it out.

This road to Zaraza it is in pretty bad condition, in fact most of the tarmac have been lost so driving such road it is worst than a dirty road. After 18 km and at 11.5 km from CP we turned to east off and take a dirty road. This road it is used by local farmers to approach and to work on theirs lands. The conditions are pretty bad because of the intensive rains that have been falling since June in this area, so with 4WD system on service we pass large mud traps and flooding road sections. In two opportunities we almost used the winch to release the Land Cruiser from a mud trap, but by forcing back and forth continually were possible to solve the situation.

After have passed 8 gates and fences and have driven about 15 km on this road we where at 750 Mts. from CP, but we advance a little bit more to explore the area and to see if were possible to get closer, but the road turn to north and when we were at 1.5 km from CP we decided to return. In this place we met Luis Javier Ramos riding his horse and asked permission and orientation to approach to our target. Immediately he proposes to follow him so we return to the point where we were before at 750 Mts. from CP. We left the vehicle and horse on the bushes beside the road and got inside the forest. We saw deer and rabbits foot prints while we were walking, the vegetation mostly consist of bushes and trees of 15 to 20 Mts. tall. We have to walk very carefully because it was common to see a bush named in the zone “pringamosa”, which is very irritant and toxic just at the contact of it bristle with the skin even it touched with the clothes.

After 40 exhausting minutes at a temperature of 36 degree Celsius even at the shade but very humid and sticky, opening a path through vegetation and have walked about 1050 Mts., we arrived to our target, which it is located at an elevation of 118 masl. The Confluence Dance was very slow because the poor reception of satellite inside the forest, but every body enjoyed as never before. I have the felling that every time I enjoy more and more this dance. We took the required pictures and return to our vehicle to have a well deserved celebration and some rest. Luis mentioned that the CP it is located at the farm named La Pereña, property of his father, Mr Jose Luis Ramos and that the area it is known as Aromito. The farm has about 1000 hectares and it dedicated mostly to cattle and corn harvest. Unfortunately, PC it is located in a not deforest part of the farm, that is keep as a forest reserve.

The economical activity of this zone it is basically agriculture of cattle and corn harvest, but not to far for here, at the south of Pariaguán it is carried out a intensive exploitation of extra heavy oil from the world largest extra heavy oil accumulation named Orinoco Oil Belt.

In our way back to home, we stopped at El Tigre for lunch and had typical meat cooked on fire held with a wood stick. Finally arrived home at 10 PM after have been driving 1060 km all day long. As always, we were making plans about the next hunt that we hope shall be soon and as challenging and gratifying as all the previous ones.
