27-Dec-2004 -- Closest I came was the town of Ikot Ekpene, approx. 40 km from the Confluence. There simply was not enough time. My wife Sarah not having been home for over three years, we were tied up in family (and in Africa an extended family numbers in the dozens) immediately upon arrival.
On the 28th there was the village festival, so no chance to get away then, and today, 29-12 it was a 05:30 start for me back to Lagos. Two and a half hours' drive to Port Harcourt with lots of police checkpoints, but no problems (I would not want to be a commercial driver on that route, though), one hour flight, and I'm back at my computer.
Seeing that the village of Mbak Ikot Abasi is spot on the Confluence, it cannot be all that hard to reach and I will have another go at it next time work or family issues take me to the East. Also noted in preperation that a number of villages in Akwa Ibom state are located right on a longitude. Planning or coincidence?
