#1: Looking North

(visited by Peter Thompson)

03-Aug-2005 -- Having spent the day in Antwerp meeting up with Kim’s school friend from Australia Brooke and Dan, and while driving back to our campsite in Spa, we still had enough daylight to try and get to N51 E05, which was not far out of the way.

We turned off the E313 and headed towards Zichem and the CP, saw the GPS counting down. I was not sure what side of the canal the CP was going to be on, so drove around for a little while getting closer to the point, stopped close to a few houses and about 600m from the spot.

Kim decided that it was getting a little late to go, so she stayed in the car, and off I went following the arrow on the GPS. As with most of the CP that I have visited this one appeared to be in a field, but not the field I was in the next one along. The first field was easy, it was the second field, the one with the CP in it that had a lot of nettles, which previous visitors had written about.

More and more nettles, and the light was fading, it was already 20:15 so I had to quickly get to the CP to get the photo’s before the light went completely, wanted to get good photos having come this far, it would have been disappointing not get all the evidence, and then the batteries on my digital camera started to fail as I was trying to get a shot with all the zero’s… Got the shots before both the sun and batteries failed and started to return to the car.

Why is it that always on the way back you find an easier way, just to the left of the field was a little farm track that had no nettles and lead me from the field with the CP in it straight back to the car. It’s always the way. From parking the car till returning to the car was about 30 minutes a quick CP visit.
