21-Nov-2004 -- Ten o’clock on Sunday morning, we left Paris under a driving rain. We were going to reach 49°N 3°E and we were all very excited : it was our first confluence point ! This first confluence may not be very adventurous but anyway, let’s go and see !

The point is 70 km away from Paris not far from Meaux. We were going by car, we took A4 motorway to Meaux. We had seen on our 1:25,000 IGN map that the point was very close to the Marne river in the small village of Isles-les-Meldeuses. So once in Meaux we turned North-East to reach the village. Having reached Isles-les Meldeuses, the rain stopped and the GPS indicated 800 m from 49°N 3°E. When we crossed the river on a concrete bridge, the GPS showed us North-East direction to reach the point. We parked just after the bridge and we were now 70 m from the point, what a feeling !!

Almost running we crossed the road and reached a little woody island, the point was now very close to us. Two of us have a GPS so kind of a competition began : who would find it first? But the competition stopped quite quickly because one of the GPS had low battery and stopped suddenly…

We are brought closer and closer to the shore by the remaining GPS. Is the confluence in the water? No… fortunately after a while we located the point just one or two meters from the shore. Here it is, celebration !! After a little fight with the GPS to display all the zeros on the screen, we took the traditional pictures of the surroundings.

After celebrating the success, we went back to Paris by small country roads. No way to take the same road as one way : motorways are boring! While going back we could see several impressive working sites of the future East TGV (French high speed train) line between Paris and the Lorraine…
