#1: The confluence point, looking north-west

(visited by Ross Finlayson)

28-Dec-2002 -- Central California is sloped in a 45 degree angle (north-west to south-east), and it turns out that the three confluences - [37,-121], [36,-120], and [35,-119] - lying on this 45 degree line have very similar geography: rounded grassy hills, on the western edge of the Central Valley.

[35,-119] is easy to reach; the hardest part is finding the correct access road. To reach it, take the Laval Road West exit from I-5. Get to the frontage road (drive beside the Petgo store and the Best Western motel), drive north, and look for the narrow, rough gravel side road on the left that loops back up the hill (beside some oil wells). Follow it until it turns into a straight road heading westward. Continue on this road; it passes about 0.35 miles south of the confluence. (There's a USGS marker here.) From this point, it's an easy hike up the grassy hill to the confluence.

At the confluence, I did the traditional "confluence dance" around some cow patties, until I got all zeros - for the first time in my many confluence visits!
