14-Oct-2007 – The adventure comes from N°38 W°121.

Having fulfilled the 3rd part of the mission, the first thing I did was to select in the GPS the new destination coordinate and I detected that it had not completely uploaded the map of the region in GPS memory and precisely the southern zone of N37° W122° was not on the GPS. According to previous analysis of the area, final access to CP is from the south through the park or the golf course.

Then I decided to set my GPS to the destination N37° 00.056´ W122° 01.297´, which corresponds to an exit ramp of freeway 17 south, near the confluence zone. The GPS set the route and it showed me that the estimated time of arrival to that exit ramp was 06:04 p.m., of course without taking into account any traffic problem or errors on my part in the routes that I would have to take. The GPS showed sunset at 06:32 pm, so I just barely had 30 minutes to overcome any traffic problems, any [possibility of getting] lost and the most important issue, exploration of the CP area without a map to arrive at the park or golf course with enough daylight for pictures of my 4th and final target of the day.

So, short of time, not even to stop for a restroom, I decided to take the challenge and started my route to hunt the world's most visited confluence, N37° W122°. I began first returning via Stockton City and took interstate I-5 south, later the interstate I-205 west and later interstate I-580 always west, then interstate I-680 and I-880 towards south passing by San Jose city. As much I was going ahead west I see that I was gaining time due to sunset. It was late, but heavy traffic more and more diminished the breach between estimate time of arrival and sunset.

In the route I could see a great amount of wind farms (Aeolian energy) and I took some pictures from the car without stopping. Finally I arrived at freeway 17 and to the coordinates that I had set on my GPS of the exit ramp. It was 06:25 p.m. and my GPS indicated that sunset would be at 06:36 p.m., so I had a very short time to hunt this confluence.

Here I set the GPS with the CP coordinate as a target and begin to orient myself with the indications of the GPS like line straight distance to objective, bearing angle and coordinates of my location through the streets of Santa Cruz town. Some minutes later, I arrived at the confluence access area from the park, but I considered that it would not have enough time to arrive at the confluence with sufficient daylight, so I continued the exploration of the zone looking for the golf course. In a few minutes I arrived at the golf course and parked my car at House Club parking area. I began to run like a crazy person over the golf course with my GPS, the camera and full adrenalin in my blood, looking for the closest point to the confluence and finally at 06:37 pm I succeeded in the edge of the greenfield a distance of 87 meters from the CP so the visit was now official. I immediately took the GPS picture as well as the other one required, saying to myself "The world's most visited confluence has one more visit," managing to carry out 4 confluence hunts in a single day around San Francisco. At this distance the land elevation is 93 meters above sea level.

When I finished taking the west picture I saw trial entrance the forest to arrive at the confluence. Then I decided to enter the forest in order to obtain a greater approach but given the hour and in addition I was alone and without a lantern, I preferred not to go very far inside and I managed to approach to 41 meters from the confluence taking here additional photos from the GPS and the zone. To me as many other confluence hunters, obtaining the "zeros" in the GPS it is important, but this time sense was more powerful than emotion so I decided it was good enough to stop this hunting with a approach distance of 41 meters. At this point land elevation is 90 meters above sea level.

I successfully fulfilled my 4 confluence hunt challenge in a single day around San Francisco, I came back to the airport and returned the rented car, then to my hotel for a shower and a great supper in the Hilton City Scape with a gorgeous view of San Francisco and the bay.

14-Oct-2007 -- La aventura viene de N°38 W°121.

Cumplida la 3ra parte de la misión de día, lo primero que hago es seleccionar en el GPS la coordenada de destino y detecto que no había cargado completamente el mapa de la región en la memoria del GPS, faltándome precisamente la zona sur de la confluencia N37° W122° y según el análisis que previamente había realizado de la misma, las vías de acceso finales son desde el sur de la confluencia sea para llegar por el parque o por el campo de golf.

Decido entonces marcar en mi GPS la coordenada N37° 00.056´ W122° 01.297´, la cual corresponde a la rampa de salida de la autopista 17 dirección sur, cercana a la zona de la confluencia. El GPS calcula la ruta y me indica que la hora estimada de llegada a esa rampa era a las 06:04 p.m. claro está sin tomar en cuenta cualquier problema de trafico o error de mi parte en las vías que debería conducir. Acto seguido le pido al GPS la hora del atardecer estimada y me indica que seria a las 06:32 pm, lo cual solo me dejaba unos 30 minutos para cubrir cualquier congestionamiento del trafico, error de conducción y lo mas importante la exploración de la zona sin mapa para llegar hasta el campo de golf o el parque a fin de lograr llegar con luz suficiente a mi último objetivo del día.

Es así que con el tiempo en contra, ni siquiera podía parar para ir al baño, decido tomar el reto e inicio mi recorrido a la confluencia mas visitada del mundo N37° W122°. Comienzo retornando vía a Stockton y luego tomo la interestatal I-5 dirección sur y luego la interestatal I-205 oeste y luego la interestatal I-580 siempre oeste y después las interestatales I-680 e I-880 hacia el sur atravesando la ciudad de San José. Como iba avanzando al oeste veo que voy ganando tiempo ya que la hora del atardecer es mas tarde, pero un fuerte trafico me hacia disminuir cada vez mas la brecha entre la hora de llegada y la del atardecer.

En la vía puede apreciar una gran cantidad de instalaciones de generación de energía eléctrica basada en la energía eólica (viento), a las cuales le tome algunas fotos desde el carro sin detenerme. Finalmente llego a la autopista 17 y a la coordenada que había fijado en mi GPS de la rampa de salida. Eran las 06:25 p.m. y mi GPS indicaba que el atardecer seria a las 06:36 p.m., así que disponía de muy poco tiempo para lograr cazar la confluencia.

Acá coloqué en el GPS como coordenada objetivo la de la confluencia y empiezo a orientarme con las indicaciones del GPS de distancia en línea recta al objetivo, ángulo y coordenadas de mi localización a través de las calles de la población de Santa Cruz. Después de varios minutos logro llegar al área de acceso de la confluencia desde el parque pero estimo que no tendría suficiente tiempo para llegar a la confluencia con claridad, es así que continúo la exploración de la zona en búsqueda del campo de golf. En pocos minutos llego al campo y estaciono mi vehiculo en el estacionamiento frente al Club House. Empiezo a correr como un loco con mi GPS, la cámara y la adrenalina en la sangre a millón por encima del campo de golf, buscando el punto más cercano a la confluencia y por fin logro en el borde del campo 87 mts de distancia e inmediatamente tomo las fotos del GPS y las demás fotos de rigor, diciéndome para mi mismo “listo la confluencia mas visitada del mundo tiene una nueva visita”, logrando efectuar 4 cacerías de confluencias en el mismo día alrededor de San Francisco eran entonces las 06:37 pm. A esta distancia la elevación del terreno es de 93 msnm.

Cuando termino de tomar las fotos veo que el sendero para entrar al bosque y llegar a la confluencia esta justo frente a mi en la dirección oeste. Entonces decido entrar al bosque para lograr un acercamiento mayor pero dado la hora además de que me encontraba solo y sin linterna, preferí no ir tan adentro así que solo logré acercarme a 41 mts de la confluencia tomando acá fotos adicionales del GPS y la zona. Para mi lograr los “ceros” en mi GPS es importante, pero la razón pudo más que la emoción así que dejé esta cacería como valida a los 41mts de distancia. En este punto el terreno esta a una elevación de 90 msnm.

Cumplido exitosamente mi reto de cazar 4 confluencias en un mismo día en San Francisco, procedí a regresar al aeropuerto a retornar el carro alquilado y luego volver a mi hotel para un darme una ducha reconfortante y disfrutar de una buena cena en el Hilton City Scape con una esplendorosa vista de San Francisco y la bahía.
