24-Aug-2008 -- Time once again for the annual migration of collage youth to Kankakee Illinois area. I had planned an attempt to do two visits in one day. I had accomplished two in one trip but never one after the other in the same day. Funny thing is I ended up doing three in one day.
Another first on this trip was the fact that after I got the kids there I didn’t do much. I told them they are here, YOU unload the trailer. I also only supervised the rental truck and it’s loading of things from the storage unit. Once we were back on campus my wife and I went Geocaching. Easiest move in day I ever had.
This confluence point is so close to the Interstate 39 I don’t know why it wasn’t one of my first ones. I think I hesitated doing it because it had been done by so many or was too easy. With a bit of experience now and a
total of six under my belt some are looking too hard for this old man. So I’ll take the ones I can get.
Early morning Sunday August 24th we left for Minneapolis. 56 Km to I-80 and only 93 Km to I-39. From there it was less that 200 Km to N43 x W89. The weather was just gorgeous, I could not have ordered a better day. With the wife reading details from the paper maps I printed out and me following the GPS and my intuition we latterly drove right to it. We arrived just before Noon CDT (17:00UTC).
At first the area didn’t look right I had imagined things from the pictures a bit different. But I parked the car and handed my wife, Suzanne a GPS and explained to her that we want the reading to be 43:00.000 and 89:00.000 start walking around and see if you can get it. As I approached GZ I saw what looked familiar. I was getting the camera ready and looking at the compass to get a bearing on which way was north, Suzanne says “there it is all zero’s”. Well after I took the required pictures and was ready to get that most desired photo…. The tree canopy had stolen a few of our satellites and couldn’t get a good enough fix for the “magic” but with three attempts I got a usable GPS shot.
Was ready for someone to come ask us what we were doing. I had a printed page all about the project ready but we didn't even see anyone.
