27-Jan-2001 -- After leaving Yuin Station (s28e116)
we had to drive to Mullewa (s28°32"e115°31") southwards rather than
westwards as there were no roads direct to s28e115.
From the Geraldton Mt Magnet Road we turned off on the Yuna Tenindewa
Road, heading north west to Balla Whellarra Road which ran right past
the confluence. Two or three kilometres from where the shortest
distance between the confluence and the road occured, the gravel gave
way to an incredibly vivid yellow sand road. The sand was stable in the
centre of the road however the edge of the road sloped upwards and thin
tyred sedans driven into this part of the road were in danger of
becoming bogged as we soon found out.
My daughter Mini helped remove some of the loose sand and placed some
sticks and undergrowth under the wheels. With some controlled
acceleration and Mini's pushing we got ourselves back to the safety of
the centre of the road. A five or six point turn was then needed to
keep away from the soft edges and face the car in the correct
direction.
The confluence was in the middle of the paddock west of the road. A
canola crop had been harvested some time ago and all that was left was
the stalks. The paddock was large and would have looked like a sea of
yellow similar to the adjacent road several months earlier.
Following the taking of photos and getting the car back onto solid
road we headed west to North West Coastal Highway then south to my
uncle's place in Drummond Cove just north of Geraldton. We spent the
night there before one last planned confluence at s29e115 on
the way home to Perth the following day.
