27-Oct-2024 -- Driving South along the Western Australia coast, I decided to spend two nights in Geraldton, so that I had time to visit this easy but ‘forgotten’ Degree Confluence Point, about an hour’s drive to the North-northeast.
This area is dominated by wheat farming, and this Degree Confluence Point lies in a wheat field, 400m from a dirt road (the Balla-Whelarra Road). Hiking across the field to the point, I took care to avoid trampling the farmer’s wheat crop. During my short hike, I was besieged by flies, which were especially bad, even for Western Australia.
One difference that I noticed compared to Thompson and Treloar’s visit - 17 years earlier - is that there is now a small power line in the area, running just North of a point.
I have visited Degree Confluence Points that lie within wheat fields in Germany and Denmark, and now in Western Australia - a place with a very different climate. This is a testament to how versatile a crop wheat is throughout the world.
Here is a remote-controlled aerial video of this confluence point.
