09-Jun-2012 -- I was on my way home to Reykjavík after a short visit to Landmannalaugar (too cloudy there to see the colorful mountains) along road no F225. I visited the upwelling springs where the river Ytri Rangá starts at a cliff in the desert near the junction of F225 and road 26, about 20 km from the confluence point. Further north 26 is a mountain road only for 4x4 vehicles, going through sand and rock deserts. I continued southeast along road 26. Only 12 km northeast of the confluence point the terrain is still sand desert, and a big plume of dust followed behind the car. About 8 - 10 km from the CP grass begins to cover the ground and a short distance after that the road is asphalted.
Near the farm Galtalaekur the road passes only 430 m from the CP, which is in a horse grazing field. The horses were not too interested in following me to the CP, they liked the grass closer to the road better.
The famous volcano Hekla was almost directly in the west at a distance of 20 km. Here, west of the mountains, the weather was good, but rather windy.
The elevation was measured to be 111 m on the Garmin GPS. The terrain was grass covered farmland, at the moment used for horse grazing.
In the overview picture, taken 100 m due west if the CP, a small white rock can be seen. It is 15 m north of the CP.
