22-Feb-2016 -- Alex Jarrett wrote on the Conference Project Yahoo! Group that it was the 20th anniversary of the first point on 20/2/16, so I decided I better get out there and mark the anniversary.
Staying in Ottawa for a few days the most convenient one was near Smiths Falls - already visited 5 times but not since 2004 in the winter. It has not changed much and barring some catastrophe I do not expect it to change much in the next few years either.
I skied in from the end of the track on Pinery Road then forked right to follow the track used by others. After I a while I passed the old hut photographed in visits# 4 and 5.
The trail was fairly easy to follow despite the snow - there had been a record dump in Ottawa the previous week and plenty remained. I did not have back country skis but the snow was crusty enough most of the time to take my weight on the skinny x-country skis.
At the nearest point on the trail I dumped the skis and headed into the bush - no swamp, no insects - just the occasional deep drift. In 10 mins or so I was at the point and had the photos done.
