#1: The Confluence from 40 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

12-May-2018 -- This is the last out of six reports reaching confluence points during a 4-day cycling trip through Sweden (from Stockholm to Stockholm). The story starts at 60°N 18°E and continues from 59°N 17°E.

Coming from 59°N 17°E, it took me another 9 hours of cycling to reach this third confluence point on one day. I cycled the longer way around the inlet Himmerfjärden via Aspa, Gnesta, and Södertälje. Alternatively, I could have taken a ferry, but since its schedule remained unclear I opted for the more solid route.

Although situated just 40 km south of Stockholm, this confluence point is located remotely on a peninsula in the nature preserve Hammersta Naturreservat. It is 105 m distance from a fjord of the North Sea on a steep hill 40 m above the sea level.

Access is best from the north-east: 1570 m north of the confluence, you leave the road, park your car and walk on a gravel track up to a distance of 100 m. At 105 m distance I parked my bicycle and climbed the hill coming from the east. The confluence is almost on the top of the hill, just a little bit down on the western flank with view into the bay. It’s a beautiful spot in the pine forest with rocky ground and a thick layer of lichen, which is clearly a sign of unspoiled air.

After the visit I headed northwards in direction Stockholm where I had my flight back home the next day. I spent the night in Handen where I enjoyed my first night in a bed after 3 nights of wild camping. The next day I cycled to Stockholm to do at least a little bit of the normal touristic sightseeing and in the afternoon I cycled to the airport.
