#1: The Confluence from 10 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

03-Jul-2022 -- We have hiked for 104 days 3760 km on foot starting in Zurich, Switzerland to reach this confluence point. The start of this hike was in January 2017, when we began our journey towards the North Cape. But we hiked in stages. At the beginning, we hiked only for the weekend and travelled back home to Zurich by train. When the next opportunity arose, we took a train to the place we had finished last time and resumed our hike from the same train station. A summary of the trip can be found here. In 2020 and 2021 we could not continue our last leg to the Northcape due to travel restrictions for Norway. So we finished the hike June-July 2022 for the last 810 km in 3 weeks.

The confluence is located 1.5 km west of the village Alappmoen and only 100 m from a minor road that connects this village with the main road no.87. The confluence is also located in the Målselva river valley, only 400 m from the river itself. Therefore, it is a low hanging fruit for any confluencer.

On confluence day, we started from Rundhaug Gjestegård, which is 7 km west of the confluence. Since it was raining, I had a delayed start at 10:15 AM. My hiking companion Elionora decided to skip this confluence, since its visit added 4 km on our route. We met after the visit at the bridge, where both roads join each other.

From the road, it were only 100 wet meters through the birch and spruce forest with blueberry ground cover. For locating the confluence, I used my mobile phone (since I didn’t bring my Garmin GPS to save weight). However, the App I used, showed some unusual 60-minute values .

After the visit, we continued our hike northwards. The weather improved and we hiked until 2 AM in the morning, until we reached Oteren. Altogether 71 km hiking in one day! This is a new record for me. When the sun is 24 hours around, there is no hurry and no reason to finish the day until you are really very tired.
