#1: The Confluence from 15m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

15-Aug-2024 -- This is the last out of 10 reports visiting confluence points during a 10-day bicycle trip from Biała Podlaska (Poland) to Chemnitz (Germany). The story starts at 52°N 23°E and continues from 51°N 16°E.

At 5:45 a.m. I set off from Stara Kraśnica in Poland, first up a 600m high mountain, then an 800m high mountain, and all this while it was raining heavily. Even though the weather forecast had predicted cloudless skies, the reality was different. It wasn't until 11:00 a.m. that the rain slowly stopped and it immediately became hot and humid again and the sweat was dripping off me again.

At noon I entered Czech Republic and reached the village Andělka where this confluence is located at its southern outskirts. It is only 20m from the main road with a monument and many information boards. The monument consists of 5 rocks and 1 pillar, symbolizing the numbers “1” and “5” that appear in 51°N 15°E.

With this visit, I have achieved all of the planned points for this tour. Today I crossed the border from Poland into the Czech Republic, then Poland again, then Germany and then back into the Czech Republic. In the evening I was victim of another fraud case with Booking.com: I booked my hotel with Booking, but when I arrived, they said at the reception that the hotel had never been on Booking. The receptionist thought I was trying to cheat her and the confusion was quite great. So, I had to pay twice. I then spent the rest of the evening trying to get my money back from Booking.

I finished my bicycle trip 2 days later in Chemnitz (Germany). I passed another two confluence points, but didn’t make the detours, because I only repeat visits when I stumble upon an already visited confluence point.
