#1: The confluence point lies in forest, next to a small creek. (This is also a view to the West, along the creek.)

(visited by Ross Finlayson)

22-Sep-2026 -- The previous visitors to this point - Phillip and Jessica Davis, more than 20 years ago - noted: "Soon this confluence will be in someone's yard”. And sure enough, recent satellite imagery showed that the land to the North and East of the point had been cleared in preparation for becoming an extension of the existing subdivision. While driving through eastern North Carolina, I was eager to visit and document this point before it got swallowed up by suburbia (like the point 2 degrees to the West: [35,-79], near Fayetteville).

As I drove through the subdivision towards the point, I was surprised to see that heavy equipment (bulldozers and diggers) were already working at the eastern end of the field - where I had been planning to park! So instead, I parked at the North end of the field - at [35.00411,-76.99798], 0.3 miles North of the point, and hiked from there (staying well clear of the heavy equipment working further East).

The cleared ground ended about 140 feet North of the point, which lies in forest. As I walked through the forest towards the point, I found that a creek blocked my way. At first, I thought that I’d have to wade through the creek, but I eventually found a log crossing at [35.00018,-76.99942]. The point lies in damp ground, just South of the creek. It seems likely that the Degree Confluence Point will remain within forest land, rather than becoming part of someone’s lot - but it might still end up being more difficult to access in the future.

I stepped back out of the forest to fly my drone from the edge of the field. Here is a remote-controlled aerial video of this confluence point.
