19-Jul-2003 -- Since my girlfriend Gaby and I will try to reach the 48°N, 76°W confluence in August, I decided to first attempt an « easier » confluence (47°N, 70°W), closer to our point of departure, with my two children, Jean-Michel and Myriam. At 9:30 a.m. on Saturday July 19 2003 we left Quebec City, driving east towards the city of Montmagny.

We then followed routes 285 and 216, as did the team who had made a previous unsuccessful attempt at reaching this confluence. When we arrived in the town of Freppel, where the first attempt failed, we chose to follow two dirt roads, the « Traverse du rang Terrebonne » and then the « Rang Terrebonne », in order to bring the car as close as possible to our goal. At about 1.5 km from the confluence we decided to continue on foot, following an abandoned logging road, but half-way there we encountered a swamp (Photo 6 and 7). We were unable to find a way around the swamp, but fortunately my son soon discovered several logs that had once formed part of a floating bridge over a part of the swamp (Photo 6). We added a few logs to complete the bridge and, now with slightly wet feet, we were able to reach a second abandoned logging road, this one covered with wild strawberries.

The confluence is located about 60 m from the second logging road, in an area that appeared to have been previously logged many years ago. The vegetation consisted mainly of blueberry bushes and a few conifers no more than 3 m tall. After finding the exact coordinates we took a few pictures (Photo 1,2,3,4), and then found a nearby spot to sit down and eat our lunch. Finally, we retraced our steps back to the car and headed back, happy to have attained our first confluence.
