Schließlich zeigt mein GPS-Receiver N 50°00.000' E 10°00.000' an – genullt!

21-Aug-2023 -- In June 2023, I had started to follow the 50th parallel north on multi-day bike tours. On these tours I already could visit the confluence points 50°N 8°E and 50°N  9°E. Now I continue the tour, this time accompanied by a friend, in an easterly direction, and the confluence point 50°N 10°E is on the plan.

This point of confluence is a special one, because it is the only point of intersection in Germany, where the number of degrees of latitude and longitude is a multiple of 10. It is therefore not surprising that the city of Arnstein has erected a really elaborate monument at this special point – which, however, was set up about 200 m south of the actual point of confluence.

Our tour begins in Gemünden am Main. First we cycle up the Main to the lovely town of Karlstadt, then we leave the Main valley to the east in the direction of Arnstein. After overcoming the "Saupurzel" elevation, we reach the small river Wern, which we follow to Arnstein. On the way we pay a visit to Thüngen Castle and we like Arnstein itself better than expected.

The subsequent ascent to the intersection monument will be somewhat strenuous. Scorching heat, the climbs over bumpy dirt roads, the bike loaded with luggage (and last but not least my age) take their toll. From the monument, a meadow path leads past the fields near the confluence point, which we walk to for the last few meters. It is located in a corn field, a few meters from an adjacent stubble field. I can reach it by picking my way between head-high corn plants – of course without damaging them. Finally my GPS receiver shows N 50°00.000' E 10°00.000' – zeroed!

I take the necessary photos in all directions, not from the exact confluence point, but from the edge of the field (otherwise you would only have seen corn plants in each of these photos). Then we continue our way further east to Schweinfurt, where today's tour ends. (Photos of this bike tour can be seen here.)

I document my bike rides (and also a few hikes) to confluence points here on Komoot.
