  50°N 10°E (visit #14)

#1: General view of the confluence (looking NW)

(visited by Nils Rennenberg and Baitong)

13-May-2011 -- On the way from Bangkok to my parents' home in Germany (51°30'N 10°E) via Frankfurt Airport (approx. 50°N 8°30'E) today, I had planned to make a slight detour and visit this confluence in Lower Franconia (then to be followed by 51N 10E further north) by means of a rented car, little daughter in tow.

When approaching this point from the north or south, it is very easy to reach via the A7 motorway - the main connection between Northern and Southern Germany -, but as I came from the west, the trip would involve some 50 km of lonely country roads in the Spessart region. The first part was simple enough though: I followed the A3 motorway (south)eastwards up to the exit at Marktheidenfeld. (Realising en route that it passes 50N 9E in just a few hundred meters distance and remembering I had looked at this confluence's description before -- but not being prepared to attempt the visit, I had to grudgingly skip it.)

From there it was mostly narrow local roads (mostly in bad repair, too) through hilly terrain of Northern Bavaria's Main-Spessart district. Not entirely without problems - such as a closed bridge and ensuing detour - but in the end without major difficulties. My route crossed the the Main River twice, at Marktheidenfeld and Zellingen, then finally joined the B26 federal road at Thüngen, and took me to the small town of Arnstein.

The weather was nice, with clear sunny skies and an EPE of 4 m. The CP is located on agricultural land about 250 m north of road B26a (sort of a bypass cut deeply into the terrain), 5 km NE of Arnstein. I parked the car by the roadside, climbed up the steep slope to the adjoining fields and found the point without problems at 11:54 am (Note: GPS pic shows local time in Thailand.) and an indicated elevation of 297 m. My second point in Germany, and the first ever for my daughter, who will hopefully become a great confluence hunter of her own in the near future!

On the way back to the car we stumbled across the official confluence monument, 220 m SSE at a position of 49°59.883N 10°00.042E (49.99806N 10.00071E), due to the local datum used (i.e. Potsdam, not WGS84). (Once again remembering how I had looked at pictures of this monument on confluence.org quite some time ago and subsequently forgotten about it.....)

5 minutes later I entered the A7 motorway at Schweinfurt/Werneck and set my sights on the confluence 1 degree further north. Continued at 51°N 10°E.
