#1: The Confluence from 20 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

08-Oct-2022 -- This is the first out of seven reports reaching or attempting confluence points during a one-week bicycle trip in Southern Italy.

Friday after work, I took a train from Zurich to Milan with my bicycle in a bag. I hadn’t realized that autumn holidays had begun in Switzerland and that the trains where overcrowded. The trip would have almost ended in Milan already! I had put my bicycle in wagon no.3 which separated me from my bike by about 15 wagons. Arriving in Milan, I couldn’t find wagon no.3 anymore. I ran back and forth, until I found wagon no.3 – but there was no bicycle! I already thought that it was stolen. The train was already due to leave and go back to Zurich, when I found my bicycle in wagon no.23. I grabbed my bike and just in that moment when I jumped out of the train with my bike, the doors closed and it returned back to Zurich (without me). What I realized afterwards: the wagon numbers were displayed digitally and had changed for the return already.

Another train took me directly to Termoli – the town where the confluence is located. I spent the night in a B&B.

The next morning after a breakfast, I rode down to the beach to the confluence. Actually, this confluence has a special location: just 50 m from the shore and also in a town. In contrast to previous visits it is not on a sandy beach as in 2001 or on a wild meadow as in 2014, but on an empty space that can be used for parking or festivals. I was able to conveniently ride my bicycle over the point without the need to demount my GPS from the bike.

There is a monument in a distance of about 100 m, which notes the fact, that the 42nd parallel crosses here the track. The fact that there is also the 15th meridian is ignored. I found this is funny!

After the visit, I started my bicycle trip southwards with the intention to finish-up visiting all remaining land-based confluence points in Italy.
