08-Oct-2005 -- Three weeks in the USA, with Albuquerque our starting point. We had arrived a few days before to visit the International Balloon Fiesta, which was great; anyone who has not seen 900 hot air balloons in the air at once should plan a trip. As the Balloon Fiesta is mainly an early morning and evening event we had time to explore the area around Albuquerque during the day, and, you guessed it, take in a few CP’s.
We drove our hired car out of Albuquerque along the I40 towards N35 W106; the roads were very good in the US, wide and easy to navigate, [we] just set the GPS to N35 W106 and drove along the highway. About half an hour after leaving our hotel we arrived at the closest point we could pull over on the I40, which was 497 metres north of the CP.
We crossed a fence and walked towards the CP. It was at this time that Kim become aware of all the holes in the ground, and she had just been reading about a spider that lived in holes in the New Mexico area, so was a little worried about them. I was more concerned about snakes, however we saw neither, which was good.
Like the other visitors to this CP, we found all the zeros next to a small group of trees, well, in a small group of trees to get the zero photo. Could see tracks left from a car, which I would think may have been a farm vehicle close to the CP. We could see the car on the highway from the point, so after the photos we just walked back towards the car. Took photo of car on the I40parked 497 metres from the CP next to road sign.
Our first CP in the US, and now we are on to N35 W105 which is only just down the highway.
