26-Jul-2006 -- This confluence is 85 km southwest of Orlando, Florida. It is on the outskirts of Lakeland, near Exit 4 on toll Highway 570 which is accessed from Interstate 4. We parked at a small pull-off along North Frontage Road. It was very hot and sunny as the heat wave in the eastern states continued. As it was noon when we arrived there, the heat was blistering. We found the spot then exited from our cool air conditioned rental vehicle. The 'wall' of hot humid air hit us as we stepped out onto the pavement. At least it wasn't a strenuous confluence to reach ... only a few meters to walk and we were there.
As other visitors have noted, this confluence is in a pond within a chain link fence. There was no gate open when we arrived and since we had no desire to climb over the fence we took our photos through and beside it. Lying on the sidewalk next to the fence, right on 82°W, was a dead baked and decomposing turtle. The dead turtle was 32 meters from the confluence.
North Frontage Road was not very busy so it was easy to cross to take the overview photo without vehicles in the way. A chain link fence on the south side prevented us from getting the preferred 100 meters away. From the location across the street, we took photos showing the palm trees southeast of the confluence and the toll booth to the west. 50 cents please, to get back on to the highway.
Walking back to our car we noticed a smaller dead turtle so we have sadly named this the "Dead Turtle" confluence. This is the most southerly confluence we have visited. We have been to two others on 82°W, one at 43°N in Ontario, Canada; and the other at 41°N in Ohio, USA.
