08-Jun-2008 -- The Quest for 58N-05W
Those of you who have been following my adventures over the last seven years will know that I have been slowly picking off the UK points and for the last three years I have been attempting to complete the set.
A couple of years ago, on August bank holiday I drove up and completed 57N with visits to 57N-04W and 57N-05W. Earlier this year I went across to Ireland and completed both of the points in Northern Ireland. So that really does "leave only one".
The problem was going to be finding an excuse - sorry, a reason - to drive to the very North-West corner of Scotland. It is a not inconsiderable distance after all, perhaps something would crop up?
A few weeks ago an email came round from work requiring me to attend an FSA workshop on Treating Customers Fairly and the nearest to me was at Cambridge, a mere 40 miles away. But what's this! there is a session being held in Edinburgh, a mere 350 miles from home, but crucially well over half way to 58N-05W.
A plan is born and the wheels are set in motion. Travel up on Sunday to Edinburgh, course in the morning, drive to Ullapool for monday evening to overnight, then on Tuesday go and complete 58N-05W, then drive all the way home in one leg. This is what happened....
Sunday 8th June - up early, for a Sunday and on the road for 9am. I had decided to drive up the East side of the UK and to take in as many CP's as possible along the way. First port of call is 53N-01W. I was here just a few weeks ago with
Wojciech Czombik from Poland, but in even that short time things have changed.
The wheat crop is now knee high, which meant being very careful trying to get to the exact spot.
For this visit, and indeed the entire trip I have decided to switch my GPSMap76Csx from trusty dd.mm.ss mode into dd.ddddd mode instead.
It doesn't take long to reach the spot and just for a change I actually get the WAAS lock. I don't hang around as I still have a long way to go, so document the visit, back to the car and on to 54N-01W.
