28-Aug-2008 -- 1st confluence out of a trip of 2

In the last week of summer holiday we went to Świnoujście – a Polish seaside resort located on the islands of Wolin and Uznam (German: Usedom), at the mouth of the Odra River on the Baltic Sea. Of course, when choosing this place I had in my mind possible visits to confluence points. The first one lay just across the German border, ca. 20 km away, on the waters of a bay called Achterwasser. One of the previous visitors drove there by car on ice, two others sailed the boat. I decided to follow the latter option.

Via Ahlbeck, Herringsdorf, and Bansin – three Kaiserbäder (Emperor's Spas) on the Baltic Sea – we drove to Loddin – an idyllic former fishermen’s village, currently a holiday resort. I was going to rent there a boat, possible with an engine, because the distance to the point was ca. 2.5 km. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very nice, it was cloudy and windy. And when we came to “Kiki’s Bootsverleih” we saw an announcement on the board “Heute kein Bootsverleih” (no boat rental today) – because of too strong wind. So, was it the end of our expedition? It looked like this, but anyway I wanted to be a bit closer to the confluence and we went on foot to Loddiner Höft – a peninsula in Achterwasser, reaching the height of 23 m a.s.l. There are sand cliffs at the southern edge of the peninsula and from there the distance to the point was ca. 1300 m – so close, and yet so far… We noticed some small cruise ships on Achterwasser, took the pictures and returned to Kiki’s bar for a mug of coffee and a piece of apple pie.

From Loddin we drove to Kölpinsee – a seaside resort, had a lunch there and incidentally came across a leaflet with the timetable of the ships cruising around Achterwasser. A brief glance at the map revealed that the ship probably sailed very close to the CP, perhaps within the allowed 100 m. So, why don’t give it a chance?

We went to Stagnieß, a little yacht harbour on Achterwasser and waited until M/S Jessica returned from the previous journey. With the help of a “Letter to Landowners”, a map and my broken German I tried to convince the captain to sail to 54N 14E. He checked his naval maps and it turned out that it could be quite difficult – Achterwasser is rather shallow and the bottom is covered with boulders, so the ships must strictly follow the navigation tracks and pass the buoys that mark the route on the proper side. It wasn’t clear whether we could approach the CP but anyway we decided to go.

The ship set sail at 15:00 and we headed west towards the Wussow buoy. The distance from the harbour to the confluence point was ca. 3 km and we were sailing at ca. 12 km/h. The weather was still not nice, we had showers and the sky was covered with dark clouds. The captain allowed us to the bridge and we carefully watched our GPS screens. Close, closer, slightly to the right, and… yes, we are there! We passed the point at the distance of ca. 40 m. Soon afterwards we also passed the Wussow buoy, so it can be considered a confluence marker.

For us the goal was achieved, but the remaining 50 passengers expected just a pleasant sea journey, so we sailed further to the west passing the villages of Lütow on our right and Warthe on the left, and headed towards Lassan. We came to Peenestrom – a strait connecting the Szczecin Lagoon (German: Stettiner Haff) and the Peene River with the Baltic Sea. There the captain made a U-turn and following almost the same route we sailed back to Stagnieß. The weather improved slightly, wind decreased and from time to time even the sun shone through the clouds. On the return leg we passed the CP some 90 m away and at 17:00 we put into the harbour. Our sincere thanks to the captain of M/S Jessica who made our voyage successful!

Przez Ahlbeck, Herringsdorf i Bansin – trzy Kaiserbäder (cesarskie uzdrowiska) nad Bałtykiem – dojechaliśmy do Loddin – idyllicznej dawnej wioski rybackiej, a obecnie miejscowości wypoczynkowej. Zamierzałem wynająć tam łódź, najchętniej z silnikiem, gdyż odległość do przecięcia wynosiła ok. 2,5 km.

Pojechaliśmy do Stagnieß, małego portu jachtowego nad Achterwasser i poczekaliśmy, aż M/S Jessica powróci z poprzedniego rejsu.

Płynąć w kierunku miejscowości Lassan dotarliśmy do Peenestrom – cieśniny łączącej Zalew Szczeciński i rzekę Peene (pol. Piana) z Bałtykiem. Tu kapitan zawrócił i nieomal tą samą trasą popłynęliśmy z powrotem do Stagnieß. W drodze powrotnej minęliśmy przecięcie w odległości ok. 90 m i o 17:00 zawinęliśmy do portu. Serdecznie dziękujemy Panu Kapitanowi M/S Jessica, który umożliwił nam pomyślne zakończenie naszej wyprawy!
