03-Sep-2011 -- Greenwich Meantime - Halbzeit zwischen Äquator und Nordpol

Fortsetzung von 43N 5W.

Trotz der vor uns liegenden 1.400 Kilometer Autobahn musste die Extratour sein. Zwei geplante Missionen auf einen Streich: Von Saint-Émilion über malerische Nebenstrecken zur Konfluenz auf dem O-Meridian. Ganz im Gegensatz zum großartig in die Landschaft eingebetteten Wein-Weltkulturerbedorf liegt die Geokoordinate völlig unspektakulär neben der Autobahn.

Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang hüpften wir über den Straßengraben um die obligatorischen Bilder zu knipsen. Das Holzschild haben wir nicht mehr aufgefunden. Dafür eine Rohrkonstruktion, die wie ein stilisierter Erdball anmutet. Ein Monument zu Ehren der besonderen Örtlichkeit auf halber Strecke zwischen Nordpol und Äquator?

Die Autobahnrampe entpuppte sich leider als zugesperrte Notausfahrt. Damit geht die Reise noch einige Kilometer auf der Route Nationale weiter. Bis zum Nordpol müssen wir nicht mehr, aber eine schlaflose Nacht wird es noch geben….

03-Sep-2011 -- Prime Meridian – Halfway between Equator and North Pole

This continues 43N 5W.

Despite we still had to cover 1,400 km of highway, this extra tour had to be completed. Two planned missions in one sweep: From Saint-Émilion on scenic secondary roads to the confluence at the Greenwich Meridian. Unlike the World Heritage wine-village fitting perfectly in the landscape, the geo-coordinate is situated completely unspectacular beside the highway.

Just before sunset we hopped over the ditch to snap the obligatory pictures. The wooden signpost we didn’t find but a pipe sculpture looking like a stylized globe. Should this be a monument to the special location halfway between Equator and North Pole?

The freeway ramp unfortunately turned out as locked emergency exit. That forced us to continue the next kilometers on route nationale. As far as the North Pole we didn’t had to travel, but at least a sleepless night followed...
