#1: View to the North

(visited by Rainer Bostelmann and Inge Piethold)

08-Oct-2013 -- On the occasion of travelling to Germany with my mother, we made a roundtrip from Hamburg to Frankfurt an der Oder, München, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Erlangen, Delmenhorst, Ottersberg, Achim and back to Hamburg again. We visited some family and friends all around the country. While staying in Achim, on 8 October 2013, I asked my aunt Inge Piethold to visit a confluence just nearby. She could not understand what that meant, but she was happy to go outdoors with me to take some fresh air.

We took the car and drove a few kilometers up to a big farm. There we left the car and started to walk to the 53N 9E confluence. After a few minutes we reached a fence at the border of a field and noticed that the confluence was some 50 meters behind it. As the field was sown and the plants were very small (we were in the middle of the autumn and the plants were sown out to grow next spring), we carefully crossed the fence and the field to the confluence. For my aunt the confluence dance was a funny but interesting thing. She felt that the confluence was a kind of mystic point, considering that there was nothing in that place but even though it was a meaningful point of the world geography.

The location of the confluence is in the middle of an agricultural area, just at the borders of Achim, a small city with some 30.000 people. We saw some lagoons close to the confluence. Considering the land is very flat there, we saw no notorial large geographic elements. We registered the point with the GPS, took the necessary pictures and went back home to share our experience with our relatives. This was the only confluence I could visit in my roundtrip in Germany that year.
