#1: Confluence point

(visited by John Dag Hutchison)

06-Aug-2024 -- Traveling from Riga, it takes about an hour via the A10 to reach the starting point of the walking. Approximately 800 meters from the confluence point, a small forest road provides a suitable parking area. From the nearest point on the A10, the destination is only about 250 meters away, yet reaching it proved difficult. The area was planted with spruce trees around a decade ago, and they have thrived. Thinning operations have left a tangle of small, withered spruce and birch trees, along with dense green vegetation obscuring the branches. Navigating through this required lifting one's legs high and holding onto the branches of healthy spruce trees to maintain balance. Eventually, the terrain opened up under tall pine trees. The actual confluence point was marked by two spruce trees that had fallen over each other.

A few kilometers before reaching the confluence point, I noticed a furry lump by the roadside. It was a large beaver that had attempted to cross the busy highway. This was peculiar, as there appeared to be no streams or lakes nearby. A couple of freshly cut birches might have tempted it, but they had been cut by a chainsaw, not by a beaver's teeth. It was a sad sight, as the beaver seemed to be pregnant. Garmin shows wrong date and time, but the data are found in the pictures.
