02-Jan-2000 -- This is another confluence located in
the middle of California's Mojave Desert - in this case near Barstow.
Fortunately, it's very easy to reach. From Barstow, take Irwin Road
northwards. Shortly after Irwin Road makes a right-hand turn (towards
the east), it passes just 1.1 miles from the confluence. At this point,
it would be an easy hike across flat terrain to reach the
confluence.
Instead, I took a dirt road - Fossil Bed Road - that branches off
Irwin Road to the left, parked near the line of power pylons (shown in
photos 2 and 3) below, and rode my mountain bike along the service road
that runs beneath the power pylons. Fortunately this took me almost
directly to the confluence.
The thinly spread Joshua Trees liven up what would otherwise be a
rather bland, flat desert.
