17-Jul-2009 -- Driving back in the night from a family holiday in Barcelona, we spend a rainy day in Lyon (35 km beeline distance). A heavy thunderstorm forced us more or less back in our vehicle, which was a rented Campmobile where all the eight of us squeezed in. By the way, I know now what happens if you try to drive through under a bridge with a signposted height of 2.90 m, whereas our Campmobile had a height of 3.30 m. I never had made any worries about the height before, when suddenly, while driving under the bridge two loud bangs occurred. We made it through, but our roof window broke. Luckily no more harm was done than this. We taped it and could continue our trip.

Without any previous preparation, I was able to navigate the huge vehicle directly up to 50 m to the confluence. I had prepared other confluence points, where we ended up not visiting. This one however, we reached relatively smoothly simply by observing the pointer at our GPS hand-held receiver.

The confluence point is located between the town Villars-les-Dombes and the little village Lapeyrouse, 700 m from the interconnecting county road. It can be easily accessed on a minor asphalt road that leads to the old castle La Grange. Parking can be done conveniently 50 m from the confluence at the entrance to a park that belongs to the property of the castle. The exact location is on a meadow with some cows, right next to a barbed wire fence.

Just 250 m from the confluence point, there is the before mentioned old brick castle named “Le Château de la Grange à Lapeyrouse”. It dates back to the year 1368. Unfortunately it is a private property that can not be visited officially.

Besides Elionora and me, the others were not interested in getting out of the car into the chill and wetness outside. They rather preferred to stay in the cosy mobile home, being tired of a long day.

After our visit, we stayed the night in a campground in Villars-les-Dombes, just 2.5 km beeline form the confluence point. The next morning, I took a morning-run revisiting the confluence and taking pictures again. However, both visits are combined in this report.

Later that day we continued our drive back home with stopovers in Genève and Lausanne.

• Description of the CP: It is located in the Commune of Lapeyrouse (226 inhabitants) which is part of the canton Villars-les-Dombes in the Département Ain, Region Rhône-Alpes, in southeast France. The landscape is dominated by a large number of rain-water pools due to boulder clay as a relict of glacial action. There is an ornithological park nearby. Within 2 km there is the Villars-les-Dombes Roman church which was built around 1250.
