8th confluence out of a trip of 12

Continued from 50°N 2°E

The visit to this confluence point determined the itinerary for the whole journey. Since the point can be visited on foot only during low water, the first thing I did was to check the tide calendar. For 20th April 2010 the lowest water was expected soon after the noon (at 12.17 pm CEST). I counted some 1-2 hours for getting to the beach and walking to the point and it turned out that I should have stayed overnight near Calais.

And so I did – the previous evening I arrived at a little hotel near the English Channel (French: la Manche). An evening walk along the seashore during the preceding low tide showed me a wide beach with fine-grained sand. On the horizon I could see warehouses of Calais and ferries sailing out of the harbour. Among dunes there were several bunkers dating back to WW II. The sun had already set and I couldn’t see the White Cliffs of Dover across the channel (34 km away), but the United Kingdom manifested its presence by the names of mobile operators displayed on the GSM phone.

The morning started sunny but quite cold and windy. At 10 am, after a short drive I came to a little settlement of Les Hemmes (part of the village Oye-Plage). I parked the car almost on the beach, in front of the dunes, and started walking towards the confluence point that was ca. 700 m away. First I went through a wide strip of dry sand, then I entered the bottom of the North Sea.

The ground was wet and soft but not sticky. I swapped my shoes for wellington boots and searched for the exact point of confluence. Carrying wellies well paid off because right around the confluence there was a vast puddle. GPS altimeter showed that I was 4 m below the sea level. Zeroes on the coordinates screen quickly stabilized and I could take pictures towards the cardinal points of the compass. The traffic on the channel was quite heavy, I caught a moment when two British ferries passed each other. To the west smoked the chimneys of Calais, to the east and south extended a coastal plain.

It was sunny but very windy and the felt temperature must have been much lower then 8 °C recorded by the thermometer. I didn’t expect that woollen gloves would be so useful at the seaside in the middle of spring. From the confluence point I walked another 300 m until I came to the line of the seawater. Thick layer of dirty foam covered the ground and the water, which looked rather unpleasant. Through the empty beach I returned to the car and had a cup of hot tea with relish. Behind the dunes it was warm and quiet, a nice place for April sunbathing.

20-Kwietnia-2010 -- Odwiedziny tego punktu przecięcia zdeterminowały plan całej podróży. Ponieważ do przecięcia można dotrzeć pieszo tylko podczas odpływu, pierwszą rzeczą, jaką zrobiłem było sprawdzenie kalendarza pływów. Na dzień 20 kwietnia 2010 r. maksimum odpływu przewidziane było krótko po południu (o godzinie 12:17 CEST). Odliczyłem od tego ok. 1-2 godziny na dojazd do plaży i dojście do punktu przecięcia i okazało się, że powinienem przenocować w okolicach Calais.

I tak też zrobiłem – poprzedniego wieczoru dotarłem do niewielkiego hotelu w pobliżu Kanału La Manche. Wieczorny spacer nad brzegiem morza, podczas poprzedniego odpływu, ukazał mi szeroką, piaszczystą plażę. Na horyzoncie widoczne były magazyny Calais i promy wypływające z portu, zaś pomiędzy wydmami kryły się bunkry pamiętające II wojnę światową. Słońce już zaszło i białych klifów Dover (odległych o 34 km) nie można było dostrzec, ale Wielka Brytania manifestowała swą obecność poprzez operatorów sieci komórkowych, których nazwy wyświetlały się na ekranie telefonu.

Ranek wstał słoneczny, ale chłodny i wietrzny. Bez pośpiechu, po krótkim podróży dotarłem po godzinie 10 do małej osady Les Hemmes (części miejscowości Oye-Plage). Zaparkowałem samochód niemal na plaży, tuż przed wydmami i ruszyłem w stronę odległego o ok. 700 m przecięcia. Początkowo szedłem po suchym piasku, a następnie wkroczyłem na dno Morza Północnego.

Teren był mokry i miękki, ale nie grząski. Zmieniłem buty na kalosze i rozpocząłem lokalizowanie punktu przecięcia. Dźwiganie kaloszy opłaciło się, bo akurat wokół przecięcia rozpościerało się spore rozlewisko. Wysokościomierz GPS wskazywał, że jestem 4 m poniżej poziomu morza. Zera na ekranie współrzędnych szybko ustabilizowały się i mogłem wykonać zdjęcia w kierunku czterech stron świata. Ruch na kanale był dość duży, udało mi się uchwycić moment, gdy mijały się dwa brytyjskie promy. Na zachodzie dymiły kominy Calais, na południe i wschód rozpościerała się nadmorska równina.

Było słonecznie, ale bardzo wietrznie i temperatura odczuwalna była na pewno niższa niż 8 °C wskazywane przez termometr. Nie spodziewałem się, że wełniane rękawiczki mogą być tak przydatne nad morzem w połowie wiosny. Z punktu przecięcia poszedłem jeszcze ok. 300 m aż do linii wody. Gruba warstwa brudnej piany pokrywała wodę i piasek, co robiło bardzo nieprzyjemne wrażenie. Przez pustą plażę wróciłem do samochodu i z rozkoszą rozgrzałem się kubkiem gorącej herbaty. Za wydmami było ciepło i spokojnie, mogło by to być przyjemne miejsce na kwietniową kąpiel słoneczną.
