23-May-2010 -- Nach meiner Ostertour zu 50N – 12E und 50N – 11E nun zu Pfingsten noch in die westliche Richtung. Zum westlichsten Schnittpunkt Deutschlands auf der runden 50er Breitengradlinie. Es ist der einzige in Rheinland Pfalz. Das heutige Sonntagswetter ist obtimal für eine Fahrt an die Mosel. Vom Spessart auf die A 3 in Richtung Köln, bei Dernbach auf die A 48 in Richtung Trier – Abfahrt Kaiseresch.

Eine Moselrundfahrt mit Geopunktbesuch war die heutige Planung. Von Kaiseresch nach Cochem ca; 12 km nur den Berg runter 10 % Gefälle ins schöne Moseltal. Es ist 11 Uhr Vormittags und meine Tour beginnt in Cochem Flußaufwärdsfahrend in Richtung Bernkastel-Kues, mit einem geplanten Stop in Ürzig. Eine Abkürzung fahrend auf die B 421 über Alf nach Kinderbauern. Von hier fährt man direkt nach Ürzig Bahnhof bis zur Straßengabelung von Ürzig und Bausendorf. Noch 500 Meter zum Punkt zeigt das GPS Gerät an. Noch ein paar 100 Meter weiter mit dem Auto in Richtung Bausendorf, das ich dann an einem Waldweg parke. Den Rest gehts zu Fuß.

Meine Startposition ist N 49° 59 889 - E 007° 00 106. Noch ein paar 100 Meter die Straße entlang und dann links ca. 50 Meter in den Wald war dieser Punkt zumindest einigermaßen lokaliesierbar. Gerade mal 3 Satelliten die direkt über mir waren konnte das GPS-Gerät noch mit nur 50% Empfangsleistung orten. Deshalb wurde die fast exakte Position erst nach über 20 Minuten Hin und Herlaufen im Wald geortet. Eine noch bessere Positionsangabe war heute unmöglich durch das dichte Blätterdach der Bäume. Mein nun 7 Jahre altes Gerät hat noch nicht die heute bei neuen Geräten, deutlich höhere Empfangsempfindlichkeit. Nach den Fotos zurück zum Auto und dann nach Ürzig fahren.

Bei einer ausgiebigen Mittagspause am Ürziger Moselufer mit heutiger Flohmarkt Aktivität überbrüfe ich alle Fotos, bevor es wieder in Richtung Bernkastel-Kues weitergeht. Hier verlasse ich das wunderschöne Moseltal, wieder kilometerweit Bergauf fahrend zur Hundsrück Höhenstraße B 50 in Richtung Mainz – Franfurt. Eine schöne Geo-Pfingstsonntag Rundfahrt geht zu Ende.

23-May-2010 -- Following my Easter-trip to 50° N – 12° E and 50° N – 11° E, I wanted to go toward the western part of Germany during Pentecost. This most western degree confluence of Germany on the 50° latitude line, is the only one located in the Rheinland Pfalz (one of 16 states in Germany). Today’s weather is perfect for this scenic drive to the Mosel. Heading out from my home in the Spessart, I drove on the A3 towards Cologne. Close to Dernbach I continued onto the A 48 in the direction of Trier until reaching the exit Kaiseresch.

From here on, my plan was to explore the beautiful Mosel-valley and the search for the degree confluence. From Kaiseresch to Cochem is a 12 km drive, a road with a continuous 10% slope downward into the valley. Its 11:00 am and my Mosel-valley tour starts in the village of Cochem. I went up the river, towards Bernkastel-Kues, but needed to get to Ürzig to also try to find the confluence. To get there I took a shortcut over the B 421 through Alf and Kinderbauern. After passing these two villages, I drove straight to Ülzig Bahnhof and to the crossing of Ürzig and Bausendorf.

My GPS receiver is showing;- 500m left to get to the confluence. Another 200m toward Bausendorf and then I park my car on a little forest trail. I’ll walk the rest. My starting coordinates is N 49° 59 889 – E 007° 00 106. I went a couple 100m up the trail and then took a left and went another 50m into the forest. The confluence was hardly locatable, only three satellites right above me, with a reception of 50% made it quite hard. I spend about 20 minutes walking around until I had finally found the coordinates. Better accuracy was impossible due to the dense canopy of the forest and my seven year old GPS locator, which lacks the sensitivity of newer receivers. I took my pictures of the place and headed to the car and headed back to Ürzig.

I spend a nice noon break on the Ürziger Mosel-shore and checked my photos. After I was done I drove back to Bernkastel-Kues and left the beautiful Mosel-valley. Again a dozen kilometres up the slope towards Hundsrück Höhenstrasse, on the B50 in the direction of Mainz and Frankfurt to get home. A great Geo-Pentecost round-trip goes to an end.
