#1: The Confluence from 15 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

08-Apr-2018 -- Located 206 km straight-line distance from my home in Zurich, this was the last “nearby“ confluence point, which could be easily visited only by bicycle. After this visit, the nearest confluence point that I haven’t visited yet will be 375 km from home.

On Friday after work, I cycled to Radolfzell am Bodensee and spent the night at my aunt’s house. On Saturday morning I started to cycle at 6:30 AM towards this confluence point. The weather was excellent, but a lot of hills prevented me to reach the confluence on the same day. Luckily I found the very friendly guesthouse “Landgasthof Albblick” in the village Pommertsweiler, just 7 km south of the confluence point.

Breakfast wouldn’t commence before 8 AM – perfect for me to visit the confluence point with the first daylight and return to the guesthouse for breakfast. On a little country road without any traffic (it was Sunday morning) I came as close as 1.4 km to the confluence point. Then I took various forest tracks until I reached a signpost in an intersection 150 m south of the confluence point. This simple wooden sign indicates the existence of the nearby confluence. The translation in English would read: “At this place the 10th longitude east and the 49th latitude north intersect”.

It is actually not necessary to hike through the thickets. Instead of hiking straight line to the confluence from the signpost, the confluence can be reached easily from a small footpath which begins a couple meters to the right when standing in front of the signpost.

The confluence is located in a young mixed deciduous and conifer forest. Fallen trees are lying on the ground. Since the confluence point is located at the bottom of a valley there is no far view.

After the visit, I cycled back to Pommertsweiler, had a huge breakfast and continued cycling back towards Zurich via Aalen, Heidenheim, and Ulm to Friedrichshafen, where I took a ferry back to Romanshorn in Switzerland and a train back to Zurich.
