7th confluence visit out of a trip of 8

Continued from 48°N 10°E

The previous day, after a successful visit at 48N 10E I drove to Ulm to visit the Ulm Cathedral that is the tallest church in the world. Its steeple measures 161.53 m and there are 768 steps leading to the top. It took me almost half an hour until I climbed the highest platform squeezing through narrow stairwell. Ulm is scenically located on the River Danube that also forms the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. On the Bavarian shore there is a twin city of Neu-Ulm. In Ulm stood the house where Albert Einstein came into the world on 14th March 1879 – now this site is commemorated with a modern monument.

Sunday was the last day of my five days tour. The day started off overcast and rainy. After a rich breakfast I packed up all my stuff and started a 900 km return journey to Poznań. There were still two confluence points in my itinerary and one of them was going to be a special one…

Relying entirely on the car’s navigation I let it lead me to Adelmannsfelden. After an hour’s drive in streams of rain on the A7 motorway and through somnolent villages I came to a forest road that according to my map should bring me to the confluence point. I managed to drive as close as 150 m from the confluence. I parked the car near a confluence information board and went east along a forest track.

The rain was slanting in my face and it was very cold – only 8 ˚C (with wind chill the air temperature must have been even lower). Walking on the track I found the place that was ca. 80 m away from the confluence point (N 48º 59.974’, E 10º 00.053’ with 7 m accuracy). From there I would have had to make my way through the wet thicket. I abandoned the idea without sorrow, quickly took the required pictures and with relief I returned to the warm interior of the car.

05 kwietnia 2009 -- Poprzedniego dnia, po udanych odwiedzinach punktu 48N 10E pojechałem do Ulm aby zwiedzić tamtejszą katedrę, która jest najwyższym kościołem świata. Jej wieża mierzy 161,53 m a na szczyt prowadzi 768 stopni. Zajęło mi blisko pół godziny zanim dotarłem na najwyższą platformę, przeciskając się przez wąziutką klatkę schodową. Ulm jest malowniczo położony nad Dunajem, który stanowi również granicę pomiędzy Badenią-Wirtembergią a Bwarią. Po stronie bawarskiej znajduje się bliźniacze miasto Neu-Ulm. W Ulm znajdował się dom, w którym 14 marca 1879 r. przyszedł na świat Albert Einstein – obecnie to miejsce upamiętnione jest nowoczesnym pomnikiem.

Niedziela była ostatnim dniem mojej pięciodniowej wyprawy. Dzień wstał pochmurny i deszczowy. Po obfitym śniadaniu spakowałem swój dobytek i ruszyłem w 900-kilometrową podróż powrotną do Poznania. Po drodze miałem w planie jeszcze dwa przecięcia, z których jedno miało być dość szczególne…

Całkowicie zdając się na nawigację samochodową pozwoliłem jej doprowadzić mnie do Adelmannsfelden. Po godzinnej podróży w strugach deszczu autostradą A7, a później przez senne wioski dotarłem do skraju lasu i leśnej drogi, która wg mojej mapy powinna doprowadzić mnie do punktu przecięcia. Udało mi się dojechać na odległość 150 m od przecięcia. Zaparkowałem samochód w pobliżu tablicy informacyjnej i leśnym duktem ruszyłem na wschód.

Deszcz zacinał prosto w twarz, a powietrze miało zaledwie 8 ˚C (temperatura odczuwana musiała być jeszcze niższa). Idąc duktem znalazłem miejsce oddalone od przecięcia o ok. 80 m (N 48º 59.974’, E 10º 00.053’ z dokładnością 7 m). Stąd musiałbym zacząć przedzierać się przez gęstwinę w kierunku punktu „zero”. Bez żalu porzuciłem ten pomysł, szybko wykonałem niezbędne zdjęcia i z ulgą wróciłem do ciepłego wnętrza samochodu.
