05-May-2018 -- This is the first out of two reports reaching confluence points during a 2-day cycling trip from Linz in Austria via the Czech Republic to Munich in Germany.
Another Friday evening has come and a weekend with a sunny weather forecast is ahead. So why stay at home? I took the 4:40 PM train from Zurich to Linz, arriving there 11 PM. I spent the night in a hotel near the station.
On confluence day, I started cycling from Linz at 6:30 AM after filling my stomach at a 6 AM buffet. Austrian’s breakfasts are great (to my opinion) and should not be missed. In my case it would last for those 100 km across the hilly landscapes of northern Austria and southern Czech Republic. At noon time I reached the spar town Prachatice where at its southern edge the confluence can be found.
The exact location is quite convenient: located not only 1 km from the center of the biggest town in the area, but also right next to an asphalted road in a beech forest. Probably the local government thought that this is the perfect location to erect an Obelisk. Obviously this monument is new since all previous visits don’t show such stone. While talking to the owners of the nearby house (40 m from CP), they verified that this stone had been erected just 3 months ago. I also spotted a red peg normally used for stake-outs. This could be a hint that more construction is coming up. In fact, it wouldn’t make sense to simply erect a 2 m high stone without explanation board.
After the visit I coasted into downtown to have lunch near the central square of Prachatice.
