16-Apr-2025 -- I had already visited this confluence point 12 years earlier on a bicycle trip in the region. But by chance we came into the area again on our long walk from Portugal to Singapore.
In confluence day, we started hiking in the old town of Avignon. Leaving Avignon on foot proved challenging. Beyond the city center, we faced an endless sprawl of mega-malls, highways, and parking lots—a landscape designed exclusively for cars, unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere in Europe. Even outside a school, parents queued in cars to pick up their children. We trudged along a highway shoulder until a "No Pedestrians" sign forced us to detour. Persistence paid off, and we eventually escaped the concrete jungle.
Nearing today’s goal Carpentras, Elionora and I split up for my side quest: visiting the confluence of 44°N and 5°E, a 2-km detour. The point is 400m off a county road and can be accessed easily on a track. Only the last 100m I had to walk along a tree-line and a grain field. The confluence point is exactly on the edge of the field, so there is no need to enter the field in order to get all zeros in the display of your GPS.
After the confluence visit, I made the mistake to attempt to shortcut northwards. I should have gone back to the road. My way was very complicated and I had to manage m tickets and several obstacles until I reached a walkable track again. It also began to rain. But nevertheless, I reached our hotel in Carpentras only 20 minutes later as Elionora .
