05-Apr-2026 -- My son Andy and I were on holiday from our home in Hong Kong, staying with my old confluencing buddy Peter in San Francisco. Peter suggested we go for a Sunday drive to Santa Cruz and visit a confluence point there. Peter dusted off his old Garmin GPS, and we set off for the long drive south. Along the way, I made a waypoint for our destination, and noticed that the GPS was almost out of battery. So we stopped at a Subway for lunch, then went into the Safeway next door to buy some AA batteries. This Safeway was immense, and had absolutely everything you could imagine - except AA batteries. We continued on our way, making another stop to get the requisite AA batteries, then parked at a golf course just 100 or so metres from the confluence. We walked down a fairway until the confluence was just a few dozen metres down a wooded slope to our left. The slope was criss-crossed with a number of trails. We followed the direction indicated by the GPS, which seemed to keep changing, so we found ourselves scrambling from one trail to another, then back to the original trail again! Eventually the GPS said we were only about 10 metres from the confluence, then promptly died - time to replace the batteries. While Peter was doing that, I took out my iPhone and opened the Compass app. Lo and behold, it showed all the zeroes, so I quickly took a screenshot. With that out of the way, it was time to take the NSEW shots, the ground zero shot, and the shot of the three happy confluencers celebrating with Snickers bars. There was an opening in the base of a tree immediately to the south of the point, in which Andy noticed a seashell, and to which he added a wayward golf ball we’d found in the woods. It was a pretty easy confluence point to visit. To make the long drive worthwhile, we stopped for a leisurely stroll along the beach in Santa Cruz before driving back to Peter’s home in San Francisco. It was a perfect day for it - the spring weather was absolutely glorious.
