#1: Looking North

(visited by Gordon Spence)

29-Dec-2003 -- This is the second visit of the day, and personally completes Wales, I have now completed two out of four countries in the UK - and 51N through 55N. Scotland is next on the list, but the nearest one involves a round trip of at least 760 miles...

Again, getting here was simple, enter Goodwick, Manor Parade into the SatNav unit and simply drive here from 52N 04W. Some lovely scenery as you follow the coast road.

About 2 hours after leaving 52N 04W I turn under the railway bridge and park up next to the "bit of scrag ground". (Indicated by red triangle Pic 6)

Visit done! - technically anyway, you are already within the required 100m tolerance. Now I am going to disagree slightly with the previous visitors to this point - in fact I don't believe they actually got to the required exact spot....

The first visitor (Peter Doggett) specifically says that they "got very close" and the second visitors (Richard & Frances Webb) haven't submitted any verifying evidence from the GPS unit....

I stood at first on the corner of the road and the lane (marked as the blue line) (Pic 6). I got close but not spot on (accuracy 20 feet/5 satellites), wandering along the lane it became clear the CP was in the back garden of the house (marked with a square - Pic 6). Pic 7 is looking directly at the CP from the lane into the garden of the house.

I called at the house and explained the reason for my visit, to which I got asked "why?" my answer of "because it's there" obviously struck a chord. I was told "you'll never get through the brambles" but that I was welcome to try. They were right I couldn't. Hmmm, back to the corner of the road and the lane.

This time I got all the zero's!, unfortunately the accuracy was only 48 feet and 2 satellites. I waited here for a few minutes, as more/less satellites came into position the accuracy went up/down so did the position. Whenever the accuracy was around 20 feet or so, it always indicated the CP was in the back garden.

Having got permission to enter the garden, I did it directly, I climbed over the garden wall. Thick underbrush, some brambles, but I got there (Pic 5). The cardinal points are shown North (Pic 1), East (Pic 2), South (Pic 3), West (Pic 4).

I drove back to the sea front from where I took this panorama of the bay (Pic 8) and then left for the 240 mile 6 hour (Pic 6) drive home. Total distance today - 494 miles.
