2nd confluence out of a trip of 5

Continued from 52°N 19°E.

Having covered over 140 km on secondary roads via Poddębice, Łask, Szczerców (near to one of opencast brown coal mines of Bełchatów) and Ważne Młyny I reached the village of Miedźno at 11:00. Even though the nearby confluence 51N 19E was already visited twice, I had the feeling as if it was “terra incognita”, because the narratives were somewhat contradictory – one of them located the CP in a forest, the other one (and particularly a picture) suggested an open field.

From Miedźno I went north and then turned to the northeast towards the village of Borowa. While approaching the village the GPS readings were gradually decreasing and reached its minimum value of 580 m. So I had to leave the asphalt road and go more southwest. I noticed a narrow dirt road running in the right direction and despite of some anxiety about my car’s chassis I decided to follow it. There was a forest edge on my right and an open farmland on the left side. I came to a power line and a fork of the road and parked my car there. The confluence was ca. 150 away.

I went under the power line, entered the forest and soon found the confluence point in a birch-pine grove. It warmed up a bit, it was 18 C and the sun shone from time to time, so the place appeared quite pleasant to me. I returned to the car some other way, managed to take picture of a single cow – the only witness of my presence there, and it started to rain. I hid in the car, refreshed myself and when I finished the sun shone again.

From the confluence I went further on the dirt road towards the southwest, with some difficulties got to the asphalt road from Borowa, and from there returned to Miedźno. Following the advice of Mr. Włodek Kania I drove a couple of kilometers more to the west, to Mokra village. There was a monument that commemorates one of the first and famous battles of the Polish Army during World War II. On September 1, 1939 (the day WW2 broke out) Wołyńska Cavalry Brigade held its ground for the whole day and inflicted significant losses on incomparably stronger German 4th Panzer Division. “If the defence of Mokra was proof of the excellent training and morale of the cavalry, it was also evidence of its shortcomings in contemporary conflict. Casualties were so high that the brigade was forced to withdraw that evening, with the 4th Panzer Division on its heels.” (from Steven J Zaloga: “Poland 1939”, Osprey Publishing). Around the monument (in renovation at that time) there were information boards presenting the course of the battle. From Mokra I went via Kłobuck to Częstochowa and then headed towards Katowice and 50°N 19°E.

ciąg dalszy z 52°N 19°E.

Przejechawszy ponad 140 km bocznymi drogami przez Poddębice, Łask, Szczerców (niedaleko jednej z odkrywek kopalni węgla brunatnego Bełchatów) i Ważne Młyny dotarłem o godz. 11:00 do wsi Miedźno.

Zauważyłem wąską polną drogę biegnącą we właściwym kierunku i z lekkim niepokojem o zawieszenie postanowiłem jeszcze kawałek nią podjechać. Dotarłem do linii energetycznej i rozwidlenia dróg i tu zaparkowałem samochód. Do przecięcia miałem ok. 150 m.

Znajduje się tu pomnik upamiętniający jedną z pierwszych bitew Wojska Polskiego stoczonych podczas II wojny światowej, a zarazem sławną potyczkę polskiej kawalerii – 1 września 1939 r. Wołyńska Brygada Kawalerii powstrzymywała przez cały dzień i zadała duże straty nieporównywalnie silniejszej niemieckiej 4. Dywizji Pancernej.
