#1: The Confluence - View to the South

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

28-Apr-2006 -- This is the fifth visit out of an 11-confluence-hunt along the 50 degree latitude line. The trip starts at 50°N 13°E and follows our previous hunt westwards along the 50 degree line.

After a successful visit of 50°N 17°E, we continued our trip eastwards in order to reach our 5th confluence that day. By the time we left the site of 50°N 17°E, it was already 18:20pm with only 1.5 hours of daylight left. We had to follow national road no.11 crossing over the Jeseníky Mountain range, then passing through the cities of Bruntal and Opava. From Opava it was another 5km on road no. 45 until we reached the village of Hněvošice at 19:47, just at dusk.

Hněvošice is a village in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. It is part of micro-region Hlučínsko. It has around 1,000 inhabitants.

At the village’s southern entrance we parked our car in 100m distance to the confluence and hiked quickly through the birch forest and reached the in point 20m distance to the main road. At that time, it was already 20:01 pm, just in time to take daylight pictures (using 400 ISO).

Interestingly, just one month and 6 days before, Wojciech Czombik had visited the confluence. Compared with his winterly picture of the confluence, a lot has changed within one month. Spring had come indeed. But not only spring had come within that period of time. Three days after his visit, on the 25th of March 2006, someone had placed a monument at the confluence. According to our GPS reading, this monument was just 1.28m away from our integer coordinates reading. The monument consists of two parts, a plastic point marker usually used in surveying and a 30 cm pink wooden peg, with a sign on it. It reads:

Point number: 5018
N = 50° 00’ 00.0"
E = 18° 00’ 00.0"
Hyoscyamus CZ:
N = 50° 30’ 47.1"
E = 13° 37’ 22.6"
H = 316m
25.3.2006

Hyoscyamus niger is the botanic (Latin) name for a flower called Black Henbane. The meaning here must be different. Obviously it denotes another coordinate system which has a translation towards WGS84 of about 45 km in western and 50 km in southern direction. I could not find any connection between the name on the signpost ‘Hyoscyamus CZ’ and the Czech National Grid. May be somebody else can help out to clarify the meaning of it.

After having documented 5 DCPs that day we enjoyed our packed dinner while sitting in the car 100m from the confluence. We drove to the city of Pszczyna in Poland, which is very close to 50°N 18°E and stayed the night there.
