#1: Overview

(visited by Karl Bryk and Michael Bryk)

20-Sep-2015 -- This is visit number 5 in a sequence of 15 visits made while on a road trip with my son Michael.

The previous is 51N 10E.

Similar to other visitors, our sat-nav had difficulties getting us to a location that did not involve a long walk to the CP. Our first attempt ended on a private road some distance from the CP, so we drove back out and went further round the forest a bit. We ended up going past a Jägerhütte, stopping the car on a track where signs explicitly forbade vehicular traffic. It was close enough; about 1.1 km from the CP.

We headed off towards the CP. The GPS seemed to be struggling to keep us in the right direction, bouncing all over the place, I guess a result of the thick tree cover. It felt like we went round in a huge semi-circle and it was beginning to get dark. Eventually we got to the CP and took the usual photos.

For the return journey we headed directly towards the car, whose location I had saved before heading off.

Thankfully.

This is something I sometimes forget to do. So we headed off trying to find the path of least resistance, avoiding bushes and difficult terrain. Approximately 500 metres from the car we heard a shout behind us. It turned out to be a hunter who had been in his Hochsitz and rather than shoot us decided to tell us the best way to get back to the car. We were directed down a small track near the Hochsitz, past the hunter's car and along a track that led directly to our car - much easier terrain the the route we had been taking.

We headed off for 51N 8E and got to within 30 km of the CP before we had to find a place to stay. It was after 9 p.m. and there was not not much about. I had been in this situation before on another holiday, not beeing able to find anything and slept in the car. This time I did not want that to happen so we took the first place that had free rooms. It was the worst place we have ever stayed in - the less said the better. Next time we sleep in the car.

The next is 51N 8E.
