16-Apr-2025 -- I had already visited this confluence point 11 years earlier on a bicycle trip in the region. But by chance we came into the area again on our long walk from Portugal to Singapore.
Just 5 km into the hike today, I celebrated crossing the 2,000 km mark with a stick toss involving a double spin. Catching the stick took several attempts due to the fierce winds. A relentless gale blew all day, forcing us to bundle up completely while walking.
We first came to the little, but beautiful town of La Palme (3km from the confluence). From there very rocky trail leads upward to the top of the hill. At the highest point of the area, we found the confluence to be still in the windpark. The windpark seems to be in better shape than 11 years ago. But nevertheless, not all turbines were rotating despite a very strong wind. The confluence is only 30 m away from one of the infrastructure tracks for the wind park.
During our descent, we accidentally wandered into an open-pit mine—clearly not meant for hikers—but none of the workers seemed bothered by our presence.
The final 20 km led us along a unique trail through a nature park beside a canal separating two lagoons. With the sea stretching out on both sides, we navigated a narrow footpath. Suddenly, we spotted a seagull behaving oddly—it couldn’t fly or eat because a string was tangled around its wings and beak. When I tried to grab it, the gull bit my fingers with surprising strength. Eventually, I managed to clamp its beak shut, freeing its wings and beak with scissors. The bird grew still, as if realizing we meant to help. Upon release, it immediately plunged into a puddle to drink, likely dehydrated from its bound beak.
Further on, we stumbled into a construction site and had to crawl under a fence to escape. Finally arriving in Narbonne, our apartment host greeted us warmly and explained the unit’s details. Despite our hunger, we explored the city, including the towering yet unfinished Cathedral of St. Just and St. Pasteur, one of France’s largest.
We ended this magnificent day with a hotpot feast in our spacious kitchen: vegetables, mushrooms, salad, and fish vanished first into the pot, then into our stomachs.
