03-Jan-2003 -- While in LA for the week of New Years and all the square dance activities that week, I thought I should take Uwe Luettringhaus up on his suggestion that more people should visit this confluence. Actually I've been eyeing it for a long time and just waiting for an opportunity to visit it. On my way from Tarzana to a Friday night square dance in Orange County was just the time. I found myself winding my way around the hills above Whittier and finally at that same intersection of Athel Drive and Oak Canyon Drive. I parked in the bare area to the side of Athel Drive and looked up the steep slope toward where the confluence must be (photo #4). It is a couple hundred feet above the house at 14478 Oak Canyon Drive seen in photo #5. I donned my hiking boots and made my way through the soft dirt up the hill to the ridge above. I do believe I reached the same point that Mr. Luettringhaus reached. At least I recognize some of the same scenes in our pictures. For example photo #2 of the urban sprawl below. It was with some difficulty that I finally got a photo (photo #6) of all zeros on my GPSR (with a Garmin EPE of about 7 meters). It seemed to be in the dry thicket of bushes seen in photo #1, not as lush in January as Mr. Luettringhaus' photo in May. Photo #3 shows the view up Oak Canyon with Oak Canyon Drive below.
