14-Mar-2004 -- It was a quiet and foggy early Sunday morning and after dropping a relative off at the Ontario Airport, I took a short trip west to find 34n-118w. I following CA-60 to Hacienda Blvd, turned south and was less than 3 miles away. Visual navigation was complicated by some low clouds (fog) from the onshore flow - visibility was about a half mile. After a couple of incorrect turns I arrived at the corner of Oak Canyon Dr and Athel Dr. I parked in a convenient turn out just off Athel Dr. and realized that I was already within 100 meters of the spot!
The street sign in Picture 6 is only 65 meters away. Just up the road, behind that house is the path I took to the confluence. Proceeding up (what would be the center of Picture 7) the hill and to the right and behind the large tree is where my eMap located the confluence. Your feet will definitely get dirty on this short hike!
By the time my GPS gps dance was complete, the clouds had started to lift and I was able to get some pictures of the general area. Picture 1 looks north. Picture 2 looks east. Picture 3 looks south. Picture 4 looks west. Picture 5 shows my GPS position. Picture 6 captures the street sign and house that appear in previous visits to this confluence. Picture 7 depicts the slope and the hill required to climb to get there. Visits # 5&6 helped describe what I might expect and detailed an experience similar to my visit. Finally, Picture 8 shows a sight that you could only see on a Los Angeles freeway - a 6-wheeled, non-articulated, stretch Hummer limousine that was at least three times as long as my VW Eurovan - or about the length of a semi trailer. I wonder how he manages to turn on side streets or if it is confined to only the freeway!
This confluence can be easily accomplished round-trip from CA-60 in under 45 minutes. From the intersection at the street sign, it was less than 15 minutes up and back with about a 100 foot elevation gain. You could easily get to the street sign and back (without the hike) in less than 30 minutes and still meet the 100 meter requirements for a visit.
